Unit 14 - Past Perfect (I had done)

Sometimes we talk about something that happened in the past:

  • Sarah got to the party.

This is the starting point of the story. THen, if we want to talk about things that happened before this time, we use the past perfect (had done)

  • When Sarah fot to the party, Eric had already gone home.

  • When we got home last night, we found that somebody had broken into our aprtment.
  • Karen didn't want to go to the movies with us because she had already seen the film.

  • Who is that woman? I have never seen her before.
  • I didn't know who she was. I'd never seen her before. (= before that time)
  • We are not hungry. We have just had lunch.
  • We were not hungry. We had just had lunch.

  • "Was Ben at the party when you got there?" "No, he had already gone home."
  • "Was Ben at the party when you got there?" "Yes, but he went home soon afterward."
  • Amy had just gotten home when I phoned. She had been at her mother's.
  • Amy wasn't at home when I phoned. She was at her mother's.

present perfect

Ex)

  • I have done this month.
    • Today is almost end of this month, but we use "present perfect".
  • I did last month.
  • I have drunk two cops of coffee so far today.

"so far today" means until now from begining of today.

in/on/at

in January 15th.(day)
on January. (month)
at 4 o'clock. (time)
last year
today

last year / in the last year

last yearは去年。
in the last yearは、今日を含んで過去一年間。

in the last yearは現在完了形。
